So, you want to study in the US?

So, you want to study in the UK?

So, you want to study in the US?

Are you a UK student who wants to study in the United States but doesn’t know where to start?  Fear not! Here are six essential tips to help you successfully navigate the journey of applying to university in the US.

There are many reasons to consider applying to American universities, from the country’s diverse range of respected liberal arts colleges and research universities to the vibrant campus life, unique academic opportunities and classic college experience its schools boast. But while the reasons to study in the US are clear, the path there is often much more opaque.

1. Start Early!

It’s no secret that navigating the American university application process can be daunting, which is why it’s important to begin your preparations early! Starting in your penultimate year of secondary school, you should begin research universities that align with your academic interests, career goals, and personal preferences. Ask yourself these four important questions to identify your perfect-fit college program(s), being sure to take into account factors such as location, campus culture, size, and available resources. Starting early should allow you ample time to gather necessary documents, prepare for standardized tests, and craft compelling application essays.

2. Understand the Application Requirements

Familiarize yourself with the application requirements of each university you’re interested in. Most US universities require academic transcripts, recommendation letters, essays and standardized test scores. Additionally, some universities may have specific supplemental requirements or portfolio submissions for certain programs. Make sure to pay close attention to deadlines and ensure you submit your application materials well in advance.

If you’re applying to more competitive schools, like one of the Ivies, you should be dedicating extra time to learning about their unique expectations.

3. Remember: Extracurriculars Matter!

In the US, universities value an applicant who demonstrates not only academic excellence but also a diverse range of extracurricular interests and achievements. So, if you want to study in the US, get out of the classroom and into your community! Plan your extracurricular activities with the same amount of care and attention you plan you select your courses.

When it comes time to fill in your Common App and write your essays, showcase your involvement in extracurricular activities such as sports, community service, clubs, or leadership roles. Highlighting your passions and talents outside the classroom is what will make your application stand out.

4. Prepare for Standardized Tests

Standardized tests, such as the SAT and ACT, have long been an essential component of the US university application process. Even now that many universities are going test-optional, these exams remain important for international students who want to study in the US, as their results can serve as a way to contextualize their academic performance. Familiarize yourself with the format of these exams, choose the test that suits your strengths (a general rule of thumb—SAT for writing whizzes; ACT for science buffs) and dedicate sufficient time to preparation. Consider enrolling in test preparation courses or using online resources to improve your scores.

5. Get Personal—Yes, That Personal!

Your application essays provide an opportunity to showcase your personality, experiences, and aspirations to admissions committees. Rather than providing an academic snapshot like for your UCAS essay, you should be aiming to compose a personal narrative that reflects on who you are and what you believe.

So, take the time to brainstorm ideas, draft multiple revisions, and seek feedback from teachers, college admissions counselors, or peers. Use your essays to convey your unique story, motivations, and why you’re a good fit for the university. Be authentic, reflective, and demonstrate your ability to think critically and communicate effectively.

Sites like The College Essay Guy, The Admit Report and Admitsee provide fantastic examples of essays that worked.

6. Stay Organized

As you navigate the application process, stay organized by keeping track of deadlines, requirements, and correspondence with universities. Create a timeline for completing each step of the application process to avoid last-minute stress. Remember that the US university application process can be competitive, so be proactive in seeking support from teachers, counselors, or admissions advisors.

Applying to university in the US as a UK student can be a rewarding and transformative experience. By starting early, understanding the requirements, showcasing your strengths, preparing diligently, crafting compelling essays, and staying organized, you can increase your chances of success. Embrace the journey with enthusiasm and determination, and you may soon find yourself embarking on an exciting academic adventure across the pond!
